About the Item

This impressive Delft Blue and white ceramic charger or plate was produced in the 20th century at De Porceleyne Fles (now Royal Delft). The image is after a painting by Dutch painter Bernardus Johannes Blommers (1845-1914). The image is titled "The Flirt" which features a young man and woman leaning on a building. This plate is one of the largest that Delft makes it is 16.25" which is over 41 cm. Since the introduction of Delft blue, plates have been decorated with a blue and white decoration. Often, these were not intended to eat from, but to hang on the wall as decoration or as a showpiece on the table. Markings: It has the original Delft logo, which includes a pharmacy bottle including the intertwined initials JT of Joost Thooft the owner of the company in 1876 and the word Delft written in this manner. Signed "Naar Blommers" lower centre, Hallmarked on the reverse. I believe the stamp dates it as 1959. From Royal Deft site: The craftmanship of Royal Delft handmade, since 1653 Introduction Royal Delft is the only Delft manufacturer of Delft Blue since the 17th century. At the end of the 18th century, less attention was paid to Delft Blue, reason for which almost all potteries were forced to close down. When Joost Thooft took over the factory in 1876, he improved the production process in such a way making an even more beautiful and high quality product which brought Delfts Blue into a revival. Up to the present day Royal Delft uses this method of producing which is the worldwide standard of nowadays Delft Blue.
