About the Item

An original graphite drawing by Italian-born Palm Beach artist Vincenzo Zito (1900–1966), whose wonderfully inventive animal illustrations are filled with wit, personality, and meticulous draftsmanship. This delightful composition transforms an ordinary city street into a full-scale canine protest, with an energetic parade of dogs marching beneath a "Curb Your Dog" sign while carrying handmade placards demanding justice for their four-legged companions. Each dog becomes an individual character. A determined terrier leads the march with the rallying cry, "We Want the Old Tree Back Again," while others protest with slogans including "Strike Against Curb," "Down With the Curb," "Curb Unfair to Nature," "Traffic Makes Curb Serious," and "We Want the Old Deal." Two tiny Chihuahua demonstrators enthusiastically join the procession, adding another layer of humor to the scene. Executed in graphite on paper, the drawing showcases Zito's remarkable ability to capture expression and movement with confident, economical line work. Every dog has its own personality, from the indignant bulldog and earnest hounds to the exuberant terriers whose oversized signs nearly overwhelm them. The longer one studies the drawing, the more visual jokes and clever details emerge. Born in Italy, Zito became a familiar figure in Palm Beach's social circles during the 1950s and 1960s. His original drawings are prized for their imaginative storytelling, technical skill, and enduring sense of humor. This example is among his most engaging compositions, combining satire and expressive animal portraiture into a memorable original work.
