About the Item

A delightful original graphite and ink drawing by Italian-born Palm Beach artist Vincenzo Zito (1900–1966), celebrated for his whimsical illustrations and expressive characters. It is a scene that invites the viewer to linger over its many clever details. Beneath a leafless tree, a rabbit rests peacefully in the grass while a semicircle of attentive hunting dogs looks on, each with its own distinct expression and personality. A closer look suggests that the tree's bare branches have been cleverly shaped to resemble the barrels of double-barreled shotguns pointed toward the rabbit, adding an unexpected layer of wit to the composition. Zito reinforces the humor with several handwritten caption ideas beneath the drawing, including "Rabbit's Nightmare," "Cauchemar du Lapin," "C'mon Men, Who'll Break the Ice?" and "A Spread Fit for a King." Executed in graphite and ink on paper, the drawing showcases Zito's confident line work and subtle shading. Each hound is individually characterized, while the sleeping - even snoring - rabbit provides a humorous contrast to the hounds around it. This type of imaginative storytelling have made Zito's original illustrations so appealing to collectors. Italian-born Zito became a familiar figure in Palm Beach's social circles during the 1950s and 1960s. His original drawings remain sought after for their distinctive blend of humor, craftsmanship, and originality. Presented in a custom black wood frame with a cream mat and conservation glass.
