By Ana Seggiaro

Located in Miami Beach, FL

Seggiaro is part of the textile field in an unconventional way, from a non-technical but expressive approach. In exchange, he obtains freedom of action from the needle that allows him to tie, knot, leave half-sewn stitches, and generate volume through the thread. In this way, she makes use of non-traditional uses of embroidery that respond to a more plastic than textile thought. Seggiaro's reinterprets european artistic traditions, infusing them with her own embroidered mark, drawing inspiration from classic prints by masters such as Albrecht Dürer, Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Bernhard Albinus. Her creative process is both meticulous and layered: she begins by researching historical images, which she then digitally reconfigures into intricate collages that form the basis of each piece. The final compositions are printed onto artistic canvases, where they are enriched with delicate hand embroidery and, more recently, vibrant paintings. This interplay of traditional and contemporary techniques reflects her dynamic artistic evolution: from a pictorial base to a greater use of diverse materials and media, allowing her to create visually appealing and deeply evocative works, focusing on themes such as authorial resignification, the body as cartography, intimacy and imagined landscapes. Embroidery on paper Overall size...

Framed Vintage Traditional Danish Needlepoint Textile Art
Framed Vintage Traditional Danish Needlepoint Textile Art

Framed Vintage Traditional Danish Needlepoint Textile Art

Located in Chattanooga, TN

Traditional “Danmark” needlepoint featuring elements of Danish heritage. The four layer strata depicts two Danish flags, agricultural and musical iconography. The last layer pays tribute to Danish geography. Beneath this rendering of clouds, mountains and grasses is what seems to be a word written in Danish. The needlepoint is beautifully presented in an ornate gold frame with a panel of acrylic protecting the art. A striking mid-century Danish textile tableau whose layered needlepoint composition evokes national pride and sweeping Scandinavian imagery. Executed in the 1970s in Denmark, this rare example of embroidered wall art presents four distinct layers of hand-stitched needlepoint: two subtle renditions of the Danish flag (“Danmark”), agricultural and musical iconography, and, in the deepest register, a poetic representation of Danish geography — soft mountains, gentle clouds, and rolling grass. The lower register bears a hand-inscribed Danish word (now subtly rendered into the layering), adding the aura of a once-personal commission. The piece is mounted under clear acrylic and beautifully set within a gilded decorative frame, enhancing its presence and ready for immediate display. Designed for the collector of fine textile art...

Ceremonial Cape Textile Art from Hmong Miao People
Ceremonial Cape Textile Art from Hmong Miao People

Ceremonial Cape Textile Art from Hmong Miao People

Located in Atlanta, GA

An oversized and impressive cape worn during ceremonial dancing by Miao people (also known as Hmong in English) from Guizhou Province, China circa 1940s-1950s in a rarely intact and well-preserved condition. Miao people are diverse minority groups living in Southern China as well as Southeast Asia with complex sub-affiliations based on attires, languages, cultural customs and art tradition. They are renowned for their textile and silver craftsmanship as well as singing and dancing traditions. This cape, rather heavy in construction and striking in bold red and black, was made from wool, hemp and cotton. The surface showcases elongated diamond patterns in complementary woven wool and couched plaque on top of the cotton part. The pattern strikes the viewer with a strong sense of dignity and power. The heavy material and pattern are strangely akin to some of the Navajo weaving. The cape is in a form a jacket with long and wide sleeves, and it was meant to be used in ceremonial occasions. Our research reveals that the piece was from the Northwest Guizhou in an autonomous county called Weining. The area is of subtropical highland and the generally cold weather was reflected in the heavy materials used in this piece, in comparison with other textiles made in the warmer lowland. There is an older paper label with price tag in Chinese inside the cape. It was purchased in Guizhou decades ago by a US collection in MA. With a span of over 94 inches long, it makes a very impressive textile art piece for wall hanging. Not framed and easily shipping folded up. For a similar jacket from Weining, see "Miao Textile...

By John Piper

Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK

JOHN PIPER CH (BRITISH,1903-1992) :CHIESA DELLA SALUTE, VENICE Screenprinted fabric, printed by Sandersons, 1959 In the late 1950's to the early 60's there was interest in painterly textiles that demonstrated the unique potential of screen printing, with its ability to capture the quality of brush-stroked colour "The monumental grandeur of many artists' textiles in the early 1960's was necessary if they were to work in the large scale architectural interiors of the era which witnessed a rapid growth in new public buildings, all which required furnishing with suitably prestigious fabrics". The painterly design is one of five fabrics designed by John Piper (1902-1993) for A Century of Sanderson 1860-1960, Sanderson's prestigious Centenary Collection. This study of the Chiesa della Salute church in Venice was taken from Piper's 1959 travels when he was commissioned by the Arthur Jeffress Gallery in London. He then regularly made paintings of the city, and drew illustrations for an edition of Adrian Stokes...

Vintage obi textile art " Broken Vase ~ kintsugi ~" by ikasu Black Gold Japan
Vintage obi textile art " Broken Vase ~ kintsugi ~" by ikasu Black Gold Japan

Vintage obi textile art " Broken Vase ~ kintsugi ~" by ikasu Black Gold Japan

By Kimono ikasu, Lena Okamoto

Located in Setagaya City, JP

Certified Kimono Meister work / Certificate of Authenticity included. One-of-a-kind Japanese textile art made from vintage obi fabrics. Sustainable artwork for modern interiors, collectors, boutique hotels, and lovers of Japanese aesthetics. [Story behind the work] This work uses a vintage obi dated around 1980ies, with a feather motif, and arranges it so that it looks like a vase. Antique obi, just as it is a broken vase, is united back again with black obijime - a string used to tie up obi when it’s worn. Framed in kiritansu (antique chest) paulownia wood. It is elegantly framed with paulownia wood originally used for kimono chest-of-drawers, and is filled with storytelling and sense of luxury. I used pieces of kimono that could no longer be used as clothing and kiritansu chest-of-drawers that would normally be discarded to create the ultimate upcycled piece. [Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors] Feathers hold various meanings and symbolism in Japanese traditional culture, often reflecting themes of spirituality, symbolism, and folklore. Here are some of the meanings associated with feathers in Japanese tradition: ・Divine Protection: Feathers are often seen as symbols of divine protection and spiritual guidance. Feathers, especially those from birds, are considered to be imbued with the protective energy, offering spiritual guardianship and safeguarding against negative forces. ・Connection to the Spirit World: Feathers are sometimes associated with the spirit world and the realm of the divine. In folklore and mythology, feathers are depicted as messengers between the earthly realm and the celestial realms. ・Symbol of Beauty and Elegance: Feathers are admired for their natural beauty, grace, and elegance. In traditional Japanese arts such as Noh theater, Kabuki, and dance performances like Kagura, actors and performers often use feathered costumes or accessories to enhance their appearance and convey a sense of refinement and sophistication. ・Sign of Good Luck and Prosperity: In Japanese folklore, certain birds like cranes and pheasants are considered symbols of good fortune, longevity, and prosperity. Feathers from these birds are often depicted in art and craftwork as auspicious symbols believed to bring blessings and positive energy to the bearer. [About the frame] Kiritansu - chest-of-drawers for kimono, is traditionally made from paulownia wood, a uniquely Japanese material closely tied to the world of kimonos. Paulownia wood is known as the lightest wood in Japan, prased for its natural luster, resistance to moisture, and resilience against cracking. Since ancient times, it has been used in crafting furniture, chests, and musical instruments. During the Edo period, it became customary to store cherished kimonos in paulownia chests...
