Pair of Art Deco Zebra Watercolor Gouaches by Shirrell Graves in Verde Frames A striking and highly decorative pair of Art Deco watercolor gouaches depicting zebras drinking at a jungle watering hole, executed by California artist Shirrell Watson Graves (1884–1954). Rendered with graceful stylization and strong linear rhythm, the compositions embody the fascination with exoticism, safari imagery, and streamlined natural forms that defined sophisticated interiors of the 1930s and 1940s. Each painting presents a zebra partially concealed by oversized tropical foliage, the dramatic black-and-white striping contrasted against softly modulated washes of celadon green, sand, taupe, and pale blue. The compositions reveal clear Art Deco design through their flattened perspective, elegant symmetry, and graphic treatment of pattern and shadow. Graves was known for watercolor depictions of flora and fauna, often combining naturalistic observation with a theatrical decorative sensibility well suited to Hollywood Regency and California Modern interiors. The works are presented in period green lacquered frames with subtle striated surface decoration, complementing the palette and reinforcing the tropical-modern aesthetic. One example retains a gallery label on the reverse identifying the subject as “Zebras” and confirming the work to Graves. Signed lower right. An exceptional pair for an exotic or safari-inspired interior, equally compelling displayed above consoles, flanking a doorway, or incorporated into a layered Art Deco or British Colonial interior.
