About the Item

Hounds & Magpye, antique engraving, Boydell 1775, English sporting print A finely detailed and large-scale 18th-century English engraving titled “Hounds & Magpye,” published by John Boydell in 1775 and engraved by William Byrne. This elegant composition depicts a group of hunting hounds gathered in a wooded landscape, their attention drawn toward a magpie perched on a tree stump to the left. One hound stands prominently in profile, while others lie or sit in attentive poses, creating a dynamic yet harmonious arrangement typical of English sporting art of the period. The scene is set within a gently rolling countryside, dotted with trees and opening toward distant hills or mountains, adding depth and atmosphere. The engraving captures the texture of the dogs’ coats, the foliage, and the landscape with remarkable precision, reflecting the high standards of Boydell’s publishing house, which played a key role in elevating British engraving in the 18th century. John Boydell was one of the most influential print publishers of his time, known for promoting British artists and engravers and for producing high-quality engravings after leading painters. William Byrne, the engraver of this piece, was a respected figure in the field, particularly admired for his refined line work and ability to translate painterly compositions into detailed prints. This print originates from the decorative scheme at Houghton Hall, as indicated in the title, linking it to one of England’s great country houses and reinforcing its aristocratic and collectible appeal. The subject of hounds and game birds was especially popular among collectors of the time, symbolizing rural life, sport, and status. A highly decorative and historically significant engraving, ideal for collectors of sporting art, English prints, or 18th-century works on paper. It also displays beautifully in both traditional and more contemporary interiors when framed with a refined, museum-style presentation. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only. Condition: Good overall condition for its age, with expected light toning and minor signs of wear consistent with an 18th-century engraving. The margins are present, and the plate impression remains visible. Any small imperfections are age-related and do not detract from the overall visual appeal. Framing tips: This piece benefits from a classic presentation with a dark walnut or ebonized frame combined with a warm ivory mount and a subtle inner line in taupe or grey. A generous mat border enhances its presence and gives it a museum-quality appearance. For a brighter interior, a lighter gilt or soft-toned frame with clean ivory matting also works well, especially in Parisian or New York-style settings. Technique: Copperplate engraving Maker: William Byrne, England, 1775
