Antique Lichen Prints Set of 6 – German Botanical Lithographs 1874

Located in Langweer, NL

Antique Lichen Prints Set of 6 – German Botanical Lithographs 1874 This remarkable wall set of six original scientific lithographs comes from the rare 1874 German publication “Cryptogamen-Flora – Flechten,” devoted entirely to the detailed study of lichens. Issued in Gera by the respected scientific publisher C. B. Griesbach and prepared by Otto Müller and G. Pabst, this series represents one of the most precise 19th-century visual documents of cryptogamic botany. Each plate is densely populated with finely rendered lichen specimens, shown in multiple growth stages with accompanying microscopic structural details. The compositions are carefully balanced across each sheet, creating an extraordinary rhythm of organic textures, cellular formations, and natural pattern systems. Together, the six plates form a powerful scientific grid that is visually striking both at close inspection and from a distance. Produced during the golden age of European botanical taxonomy, these lithographs were created as serious reference tools for pharmacists, physicians, and natural scientists. Unlike decorative flower books intended for the general public, true cryptogam atlases such as this were printed in far smaller numbers and were subjected to hard professional use. As a result, intact matching sets have become increasingly scarce on the market. The restrained monochrome palette gives this set a timeless graphic quality that integrates effortlessly into both classical and contemporary interiors. Displayed as a horizontal 3×2 wall arrangement or in vertical pairing formats, the set works exceptionally well in studies, medical offices, libraries, design hotels, law firms, galleries, and minimalist residential spaces. The scientific precision combined with the abstract beauty of lichen morphology makes this set particularly attractive to modern interior designers seeking authentic historical material with strong visual structure. This is a cohesive original 19th-century wall ensemble, not a later reproduction or decorative reprint. Each plate is an authentic lithograph pulled from the original 1874 publication. Condition Report All six plates are in very good antique condition. Light, even age toning consistent with 19th-century paper. No tears or losses observed. Margins remain intact. Image impressions are crisp and well preserved. Minor surface marks or faint edge handling wear may be present but do not detract from display quality. Framing Suggestions This set presents beautifully in slim natural oak or walnut frames with deep ivory museum mats for a clean, contemporary gallery look. For a more dramatic, archival presentation, matte black frames with soft off-white mats will emphasize the fine line work and give the set a striking museum-style presence. UV-protective glazing is recommended for long-term preservation. Technique: Lithography Maker: Otto Müller & G. Pabst, Germany, 1874 SEO Keyword Block antique botanical prints, lichen lithographs, cryptogam flora, 19th century science prints, german botanical art, medical wall art, pharmacy decor, scientific wall set, black and white botanical prints, natural history lithographs, antique plant prints, lichen study plates, interior designer wall art, antique scientific illustration

Located in Langweer, NL

Mallard Duck Family – Antique Bird Chromolithograph with Ducklings c.1880 This charming late 19th-century ornithological chromolithograph depicts a mallard duck family (Anas platyrhynchos), showing two adult birds accompanied by a group of downy ducklings at the water’s edge. The scene is set within a gently landscaped riverside environment, with reeds, grasses, and a pollarded tree framing the composition, reflecting the period’s preference for naturalistic habitat depiction alongside accurate zoological detail. The mallard, also known as the wild duck or common duck, is one of the most recognizable and widely distributed waterfowl species in Europe. In this print, the adults are shown in calm interaction near shallow water, while the ducklings cluster nearby, their soft plumage and tentative posture rendered with notable sensitivity. The image balances scientific clarity with a narrative, almost pastoral quality that was especially valued in late 19th-century natural history illustration. Executed as a chromolithograph, the print displays rich yet restrained coloration. Subtle greens and browns dominate the landscape, harmonizing with the patterned plumage of the ducks and the warm tones of the ducklings. The technique allows for smooth color transitions and fine detailing, particularly visible in the feather patterns and reflections in the water. Such prints were often produced for educational atlases and popular natural history books, intended to appeal to both scholars and a broader audience. This work is ideal for collectors of antique bird prints, waterfowl imagery, or pastoral wildlife scenes. It also suits interior settings ranging from country houses and coastal homes to nurseries, kitchens, or refined contemporary interiors, where its gentle subject matter and balanced palette add warmth and character. Condition report Good antique condition. Light foxing and mild age-related toning visible in the margins, consistent with chromolithographs of this period. Image area remains fresh and well-colored. No major tears or losses observed. Framing tips Frame with a wide off-white or soft beige mat and a natural wood, walnut, or simple black frame. This enhances the calm landscape tones and gives the print a timeless, museum-style presentation. Keywords antique bird print, mallard duck illustration, wild duck, ducklings print, waterfowl art...

Antique Arabian Horse Lithograph “Aga” by August Jäger, 1846
Antique Arabian Horse Lithograph “Aga” by August Jäger, 1846

Antique Arabian Horse Lithograph “Aga” by August Jäger, 1846

Located in Langweer, NL

Title: Antique Arabian Horse Lithograph “Aga” by August Jäger, 1846 Description: An elegant and highly refined antique lithograph depicting the Arabian stallion “Aga,” published in Stuttgart in 1846 as part of August Jäger’s celebrated equestrian work Das orientalische Pferd (“The Oriental Horse”). This striking composition presents the horse in a classic side profile, emphasizing the purity, balance, and noble proportions that made Arabian horses among the most admired breeds of the 19th century. The lithograph was issued by the Stuttgart publisher G. Ebner, whose imprint appears in the lower right margin. The notation in the lower left suggests the plate formed part of the first installment of the series. Das orientalische Pferd is regarded as one of the notable European publications devoted to the study and appreciation of Oriental horse breeds during a period when Arabian bloodlines were increasingly sought after by aristocratic breeders and cavalry traditions throughout Europe. Arabian horses are among the oldest and most influential horse breeds in the world. Carefully bred by Bedouin tribes for endurance, intelligence, elegance, and speed, these horses became foundational bloodlines for numerous modern breeds, including the Thoroughbred. Their refined heads, high tail carriage, and graceful movement made them symbols of prestige and refinement during the 18th and 19th centuries. This particular composition is remarkable for its understated sophistication. The horse stands alone against a minimal ground, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the elegant anatomy and subtle tonal modeling of the animal. The monochrome lithographic technique lends the image a timeless, almost sculptural quality, while the delicate shading and precise draftsmanship demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship associated with German lithography of the period. Today, prints from Das orientalische Pferd are admired both for their historical importance and for their decorative appeal. The restrained palette and graceful composition make this example particularly suitable for sophisticated interiors ranging from traditional libraries to contemporary equestrian-inspired spaces. This print displays exceptionally well in dark walnut, black lacquer, or lightly gilt frames paired with a wide ivory or oatmeal mat. Its elegant monochrome palette and refined equestrian subject make it especially suitable for libraries, studies, country houses, horse stables, riding clubs, or sophisticated gallery walls. This is an original antique print, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The piece is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale. Antique Arabian Horse Lithograph “Aleppo” by August Jäger, 1846

Located in Langweer, NL

Title: Antique Arabian Horse Lithograph “Aleppo” by August Jäger, 1846 Description: A dramatic and highly decorative antique lithograph depicting the Arabian stallion “Aleppo,” published in Stuttgart in 1846 as part of August Jäger’s renowned equestrian work Das orientalische Pferd (“The Oriental Horse”). Unlike many static equestrian portraits of the period, this composition captures the horse in an animated, spirited pose with raised forelegs, accompanied by a partially visible handler, creating a striking sense of movement and vitality. The lithograph was issued by the Stuttgart publisher G. Ebner, whose imprint appears in the lower right margin. The notation “I. Lfg. 5.” indicates this plate formed part of the fifth issue in the first installment of the series. Das orientalische Pferd is among the notable 19th-century European publications dedicated to the study and admiration of Arabian and Oriental horse breeds, reflecting the fascination these animals inspired among aristocratic breeders, military circles, and collectors throughout Europe. The Arabian horse has long been regarded as one of the world’s most refined and influential breeds. Carefully developed by Bedouin tribes for endurance, intelligence, loyalty, and speed, Arabian bloodlines later became foundational in the development of numerous modern horse breeds, including the Thoroughbred. Their elegant heads, arched necks, and proud carriage made them highly sought after during the 18th and 19th centuries. This particular composition is especially appealing for its dynamic energy and theatrical presentation. The richly adorned tack, elegant harness details, and lively posture of the horse give the image a more romantic and expressive quality than many conventional equestrian studies. The monochrome lithographic technique enhances the sculptural modeling of the horse while maintaining the refined academic style characteristic of high-quality German lithography from the period. Today, prints from Das orientalische Pferd are admired both as historical equestrian studies and as sophisticated decorative artworks. This example combines strong visual impact with timeless elegance, making it especially suitable for refined interiors and equestrian collections. This print displays exceptionally well in dark walnut, black lacquer, or lightly gilt frames paired with a wide ivory or oatmeal mat. Its dramatic equestrian subject makes it particularly suitable for libraries, studies, country houses, riding clubs, horse stables, or sophisticated gallery walls. This is an original antique print, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. Great Britain 1300–1500, Antique Hand-Colored Medieval Costume Print This finely rendered antique costume plate offers a detailed and elegant overview of British dress between 1300 and 1500, a period defined by the late Middle Ages and the early beginnings of the English Renaissance. Drawn by Max Tilke and printed by Ernst Wasmuth A.-G. in Berlin, the plate captures a wide range of English social types, from armored knights to noblewomen, courtiers, and urban citizens. The hand-coloring is soft yet vibrant, giving the figures a distinct presence while retaining the scholarly clarity of the original publication. The upper register depicts individuals from the 14th and early 15th centuries. On the left, two armored figures represent the martial culture of medieval England, complete with shields, chainmail, and transitional plate armor. Beside them stands a queen or noblewoman in a red gown trimmed with ermine. Young courtiers and ladies-in-waiting follow, wearing fitted gowns, long sleeves, and elegantly draped fabrics typical of the period. The lower register moves toward the 15th century, showing the growing influence of continental fashion. A richly dressed courtier in purple robes gestures toward a noblewoman wearing a tightly fitted gown and headdress. Other figures illustrate the evolution of English headwear, from wimples and veils to the early forms of the gable hood. At far right, a colorfully dressed gentleman with a feathered hat reflects the increasing individuality and flourish that characterized late medieval wardrobes. This plate is of particular interest to collectors of medieval art, historical costume, or British history. The composition offers an engaging perspective on changing silhouettes, materials, and social roles in pre-Tudor England. It makes a superb display piece for libraries, offices, studies, and historically inspired interiors. Condition report: Good antique condition with gentle age toning. Minor edge wear and a few faint spots in the margins. Image area clean with vivid hand-coloring. No tears or repairs. Framing tips: Pair with a cream or parchment mat and a dark wood frame to accentuate the medieval palette. A thin gilt frame provides a more formal, museum-like presentation. Floating the sheet preserves the imprint and strengthens the antique character.
