About the Item

This early 20th-century French hand-woven tapestry, crafted circa 1920, depicts a dramatic maritime scene of three fishermen navigating choppy waters as they cast their nets from a small wooden boat marked “147.” Rendered in rich, earthy tones of slate, ochre, and russet, the composition is full of movement and atmosphere, with expressive detail in the figures and sea. The lower right is signed AUBUSSON, referring to the historic French town celebrated since the 17th century for its exceptional tapestry weaving. Long associated with royal commissions and fine decorative arts, Aubusson became a symbol of textile excellence across Europe. Woven in wool and mounted in a molded oak frame, the tapestry measures 59.25 inches wide by 46.25 inches high, making it nearly six feet across. The generous scale and depth of color make this a standout piece for a study, hallway, or nautical-themed interior. Excellent condition commensurate with age and use with strong color retention; a striking and collectible example of early 20th-century French craftsmanship.
