About the Item

A remarkable antique Dutch mourning necklace, composed of three strands of deep black jet beads and an exceptional 14K gold clasp of regional significance. The necklace is formed of substantial jet beads (approx. 12 mm in diameter), their rich, glossy surface creating a beautiful contrast against the warmth of the gold. The three rows sit closely around the neck, giving the piece both presence and elegance. The focal point is the elaborate clasp, measuring 47 mm x 40 mm, crafted in 14 karat gold and finely detailed with granulation and layered ornamentation. At its center, beneath glass, a delicate hand-painted mourning scene is preserved, a quiet and intimate detail that reflects the sentiment behind the jewel. The clasp was made between 1874 and 1923 by the Rozendaal brothers in Hoorn, The Netherlands, respected goldsmiths whose work forms part of the rich tradition of Dutch regional jewelry. Necklaces of this type were worn as part of the regional mourning costume in certain parts of the Netherlands. Today, they stand as powerful examples of 19th- and early 20th-century Dutch cultural heritage, both decorative and deeply symbolic.
