About the Item

This shell cameo in the form of a rounded rectangle was carved around 1900 ca. out of a three layered shell. The bottom layer is of a dark fudge colour, the next layer of a deep purplish blue. The top layer is white, in parts carved so thin that the purplish blue is shining through. It depicts a procession with three Dionysus boys and a billy goat. One boy is riding on the billy goat, playing cymbals. One boy, the leader of the procession, is holding the billy goat on a leash. The third boy is holding onto the one sitting on the billy goat. In the background we see a hill with buildings. The left edge of the carving is flanked by a tree, a group of birds is flying on the horizon.
