We acquired this extraordinary pendant from an antique jewelry dealer in New Zealand. Sort of a hybrid between a garland and a wreath, it boasts at least 1.7 carats in old cut diamonds plus eight pearls, all meticulously set from its hinged bale to its hinged diamond "tail." The enhancer bale is split in the back so that it can be worn with pearls. To that end, we're including a gorgeous 16" strand of 5.5 to 6mm Akoya saltwater pearls. We had these pearls strung specifically for this pendant, and to give the necklace a more contemporary feel, the pearls have been fully knotted in black silk, which we think really pops with the oxidized face of the pendant. The closure is a 14 karat white gold pearl clasp. More information on the pearls is provided below. METALS & PENDANT AGE: We think this pendant probably dates from the late 19th or very early 20th century. While the pearls and the diamonds provide clues, the big tipoff is the fact that the stones are set in a thin layer of silver soldered onto 14 karat gold. This technique -- a thin layer of white metal (platinum was also used after around 1870) -- was used until white gold came into general use in the mid- to late 1910s. The distinctive black metal finish is nothing more than generations of the silver's natural oxidization. A rare and delightful late 19th-century gilt-brass vesta case with hand-painted enamel scenes, in the tradition of playful Continental "novelty" smoking accessories. The exterior lid depicts a gentleman seated on a riverbank fishing, while a lady stands nearby. Below, a hand-painted French inscription reads: “Entagaînant le goujon jéveux”, which loosely translates as “Catching the gudgeon I desire.” In French slang of the period, “gudgeon” (goujon) was both a small fish and a playful metaphor for a naïve “catch,” giving the scene a humorous double meaning. Opening the case reveals a hidden risqué scene: the same couple, but with the lady having taken a tumble, her skirts up and legs in the air, much to the surprise of her companion. The interior enamel is inscribed in French “Les surprises de Suzon” (“Suzon’s surprises”), a humorous and cheeky detail typical of these whimsical 19th-century objets de vertu. The case is of gilt brass with a ribbed striking surface to the base and retains its original hinged construction. The enamel is beautifully executed in vivid colors and remains in very good condition for its age, with only minor wear consistent with use. Dimensions: Approx. A stunning antique Victorian seed pearl and crystal, 15 karat yellow gold necklace; part of our diverse antique estate jewelry collections. This stunning, fine and impressive antique necklace has been crafted in 15k yellow gold. The feature setting has a floriated paired leaf design, ornamented to the center with a cabochon cut crystal. A further two cabochon cut crystals are displayed to the terminal of two asymmetrical pair leaf design linear drops. Each crystal is ornamented with a seed pearl set diagonal band. The floriated setting is embellished with a total of one hundred and sixty-seven pavé and bezel set seed pearls, varying in size depending on position. The necklace chain is composed of one hundred and three individual seed pearl set links, securing to the reverse with a rectangular push fit fastening. The necklace benefits from the addition security of a fine link safety chain. This antique Victorian pearl and crystal necklace is fitted to the original leatherette, satin and velvet lined push fit presentation case. The necklace has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as 15k gold.
