René François Xavier Prinet (31 December 1861, Vitry-le-François – 26 January 1946, Bourbonne-les-Bains) was a French painter and illustrator who drew his subjects from middle-class society. He was born to Henri Prinet, an Imperial Prosecutor in Vitry-le-François. He was celebrated for his genre scenes, biblical stories, landscapes, portraits, and Orientalist subjects. As a teacher and director of the Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent and the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Portaels significantly impacted Belgian art, becoming a pivotal figure in the Belgian Orientalist school. His works were known for their 'everyday elegance and feminine grace,' and he played a crucial role in influencing the next generation of Belgian artists, including notable figures like Théo van Rysselberghe. Portaels was the son of a wealthy brewer who also served as Vilvoorde's mayor. Showing an early passion for drawing, he was sent to the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1836, where he studied under François-Joseph Navez, a former student of Jacques-Louis David. In 1841, Portaels moved to Paris, enrolling at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and studying under Paul Delaroche. In 1842, he won the Grand Prix de Rome, which funded his travels across Italy and other regions, including Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Judea, Spain, Hungary, and Norway. These journeys profoundly influenced his artistic vision, particularly his Orientalist works. Upon his return to Belgium in 1847, Portaels was appointed Director of the academy in Ghent. In 1849, he married Marie Hélène Navez, the daughter of his first teacher. Despite being offered the directorship of the Brussels Academy, he initially declined, opting to preserve his independence. He later accepted a teaching position at the Academy and eventually became its director in 1878, succeeding Eugène Simonis. Portaels was known for his broad range of artistic talents, including history painting, portraiture, and genre art. He was particularly recognised for his Orientalist depictions, often portraying the 'Oriental woman' with distinctive features like arched eyebrows and almond-shaped eyes. His style, marked by charm and elegance, distinguished him from the dominant artistic movements of Classicism and Romanticism. He was a Belgian figurative painter whose work encompassed genre scenes, seascapes, floral still lifes, female figures, nudes, and portraits. Over the course of his career, he developed a distinctive painterly language that combined academic training with a luminous, colour-rich sensibility. From an early age, Glansdorff showed a natural inclination toward pictorial expression. The picturesque aspects of life and landscape emerged organically in his work rather than as a calculated artistic choice. His visual world was shaped by instinct as much as by study, resulting in compositions that often feel immediate and atmospheric. He initially admired the Flemish Primitives, whose influence can be felt in his attention to structure and tonal harmony. However, Glansdorff gradually evolved toward a more personal form of Luminism, characterised by warm light effects, vibrant colour, and a heightened sensitivity to atmosphere. His palette became increasingly rich and expressive, particularly in his floral compositions for which he gained considerable recognition. Glansdorff studied at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts, where he worked alongside and was influenced by artists such as Joseph Stallaert. During his formative years, he also developed friendships with contemporary artists including Joris De Bruyne, Alphonse Blomme, and Albert Alleman. He became a member of the Cercle Artistique et Littéraire de Bruxelles, an important artistic circle in the Belgian capital. In 1904, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Brussels, presenting works such as Armenian Fiddler. Later, in 1920, he participated in exhibitions at the Cercle Artistique et Littéraire, the Salle Studio, and the Salon d’Automne, alongside artists such as Pierre Abattucci, Firmin Baes...

Hercules and Omphale Oil on panel, 52 x 41 cm According to legend, Hercules had to make atonement and became a slave to the Lydian queen Omphale. When she found out who her slave was, she married him. Falling for his mistress and made effeminate by the luxury of court life, the former hero allowed himself to become the laughing stock of the court. He dressed in women's clothes, spun wool and did other women's work, whereas Omphale wore his lion's skin and carried a wooden club. When the time of punishment was over, the hero realised his delusion and left Omphale. So far, the painting could not be clearly assigned to an artist. Nevertheless, it impresses with its fluid and convincing painting, whose colourfulness and conception are reminiscent of the Prague School around Bartholomäus Spranger. This work follows an engraving and an etching made by Michel Dorigny in 1643 after a design by Simon Vouet. It shows the same scene but the print differs in minor details from the present painting (see e.g. the head of the lion) and the treatment of the faces seems to be painted more detailed and refined.
