"Sanity Hearing" Satirical Etching

By Charles Bragg

Located in Soquel, CA

"Sanity Hearing" Satirical Etching Satirical etching by Charles Bragg (American, 1931-2017). This scene depicts a chaotic courtroom, ostensibly the location of this "Sanity Hearing." A man wearing a suit of armor sits with his hand raised taking an oath of honesty on top of three books labeled "Bible," "Holy Bible," and "Cookbook." The judge sits behind him, holding a fly swatter with a glass tankard of beer in front of him. A man in the bottom right corner reads the Bill of Rights but he holds it upside down. Other guests of the courtroom include multiple kittens, a man gnawing on the bench, and a toucan on a leash. Numbered as "104/300" in bottom left corner. Titled "Sanity Hearing" in center edge. Signed "Charles Bragg" in bottom right corner. Frame size: 20.32" H x 22.63" W Image size: 10.27" H x 12.75" W Charles Bragg (American, 1931-2017) was a painter, sculptor, and illustrator of commentary on human behavior, based out of Los Angeles, California. Bragg often injected his sense of humor and appreciation of satire into his subjects, many of which are cartoonish and seem half human and half animal. He also depicted serious subjects, ones that become poignant commentaries on the human condition. Bragg was born in St. Louis Missouri in 1931. His parents were vaudeville performers, and he spent most of his young life traveling on tour with them. During his teenage years, he went to New York's High School of Music & Art in Harlem. At 18, he ran away with his high school sweetheart, fellow artist Jennie Tomao...

Edition number 49 of 90 Framed 28"H x 24"W x 1.5"D. Signed in pencil, Inscribed Pl. 3 and numbered 49 of 90 Literature: “Marc Chagall The Lithograph LA COLLECTION SORLIER”, Distributed Art Pub Inc, 1999, p.64, No.38 Plate 3 from the series Four Tales from the Arabian Nights (1948), created after Chagall was commissioned to produce illustrations inspired by the classic Middle Eastern stories commonly known as Arabian Nights. The title itself comes directly from the story text and reflects Chagall’s characteristic lyrical, intimate, and floating composition style. In the 1940s–1950s, Chagall was commissioned to create illustrations for One Thousand and One Nights (often called Arabian Nights). The stories—filled with magic, romance, fantasy, and transformation—perfectly matched Chagall’s imaginative visual language. Chagall’s Arabian Nights...

Alexander Calder Mid Century Derrière le Miroir Lithograph

By Alexander Calder

Located in Soquel, CA

Vintage 1960s Alexander Calder Lithograph double page part of portfolio "Derriere le Miroir". Published by: Galerie Maeght, Paris, 1966. No. 156. Text on verso. Unsigned from an unknown edition. Presented in black mat with red core. Mat size: 20"H x 24"W. Image size: 15"H x 22"W. American artist Alexander Calder changed the course of modern art by developing an innovative method of sculpting, bending, and twisting wire to create three-dimensional “drawings in space.” Resonating with the Futurists and Constructivists, as well as the language of early nonobjective painting, Calder’s mobiles (a term coined by Marcel Duchamp in 1931 to describe his work) consist of abstract shapes made of industrial materials––often poetic and gracefully formed and at times boldly colored––that hang in an uncanny, perfect balance. His complex assemblage Cirque Calder (1926–31), which allowed for the artist’s manipulation of its various characters presented before an audience, predated Performance Art by some 40 years. Later in his career, Calder devoted himself to making outdoor monumental sculptures...
