OPEN EQUIVALENCE 1 - acrylic on cut linen with cotton thread -Abstract Geometric

By Linda King Ferguson

Located in Signal Mountain, TN

In this sculptural piece, Linda King Ferguson has cut a piece of linen canvas into a half-diamond shape, with an ellipsis cut-out close to the scalloped right edge. A red cotton thread completes the second half of the diamond shape, then hangs from the bottom corner, evoking the image of a kite. King Ferguson's paintings are abstractions of the female body. She chooses to use linen...

LOVE, ME - Figurative Painting on Brown Fabric

By Omari Booker

Located in Signal Mountain, TN

This painting by Omari Booker depicts himself and his sister when they were children. Originally painted as a study for a mural in Nashville, Tennessee, Booker reworked this very personal piece to stand alone. On the left side of this painting, Omari's sister sits in a pink and white polk-a-dot dress with a bow in her hair. She looks lovingly at her brother to the right, who is wearing a black and white button-up. The artist recalled that his mother made those outfits by hand, and he alludes to the special nature of textiles in his history by utilizing found fabric rather than a canvas as his medium. Omari Booker, a Nashville native, began his journey in the visual arts at Montgomery Bell Academy. Since then, he has studied and displayed his work at multiple institutions including Belmont University, Middle Tennessee State...

GOD WANTS ME TO FORGIVE THEM!?! - Oil Painting of a Frightened Bob the Tomato

By Victoria Sauer

Located in Signal Mountain, TN

A scene of distress is depicted in this work regarding Bob the Tomato, a primary character in the acclaimed children’s animation, VeggieTales. “God Wants Me to Forgive Them!?!” challenges the formative life lessons we are taught from a young age that is not always easy to uphold. Based on a prophetic dream I had surrounding ideas of violence, familial relationships, estrangement, biblical references, revenge, and ultimately death, this painting begs...

MIDNIGHT IN EDEN - Orange, Blue, Brown Adam and Eve in Surreal Garden at Night

By Constantin Werner

Located in Signal Mountain, TN

This painting is Werner's interpretation of The Garden of Eden at nighttime, as he imagines it becomes a hellscape after dark. Animals lurk in the darkness behind an emaciated Adam and Eve, the red eyes of a bull-headed dragon pierce through the darkness. "This was my idea: how about if the the Garden Eden was only a peaceful place during the daytime? Once night falls, dark and cruel animals appear, including bats and giant rodents, ruled by the Snake King (here a giant dragon with a male and a female head). Those frightening creatures represent the suppressed, destructive libido of Adam and Eve (painted upside down from each other to show that they are opposites.) Innocent, they only dream about sin and their dark, unrecognized desires." -Constantin Werner

CHEF'S HAT - Intricate Collage Wall Hanging Sculpture w/ Thick Painted Paper

Located in Signal Mountain, TN

"I welcome the continual emergence of change, evolution, and the inevitable challenges that form a large part of a working artist’s life." With CHEF'S HAT, a recent and evolving work, I am moving into more dimensionality and space. My intention is to push patterned and embellished surfaces on paper from its naturally flat surface into a more structural and spatial plane. This involves making sculptural pieces from paper and experimenting with new construction methods using strips and lengths of paper over-lapped and fastened together, shaped into objects with physical presence. I feel I am migrating from the flat surface into the third dimension. I envision the paper constructions as a landscape to be wandered in and out of, through and around, a space that invites all and sundry to enter on their own terms. I hold firmly to the belief that my work exhibits a playfulness that belies a more serious assessment of our social world. I am interested in how something that is initially perceived as frivolous and celebratory can constitute a reaction against and resistance to the shadowy world of misfortune, hard luck, and weariness. Born in 1959, Lanie Gannon was predominantly inspired by the 1970s. Conceptualism is often perceived as a reaction to Minimalism, and the leading art movement of the 1970s, challenging the boundaries of art with its revolutionary features. The movements that succeeded were all representative of a strong desire to evolve and strengthen the art world, in response to the tensions of the previous 1960s. Process art branched...

OYV-19 - Contemporary Abstract Collage Painting- Yellow, measuring tape

Located in Signal Mountain, TN

OYV-19 is part of Eric Mack's ongoing body of work utilizing multi-media, complex compositions, and a grid centered around urban design. Using a grid to create the framework of the painting, Mack has re-purposed an old Lenny Kravitz album cover as the structure of the piece. On the edges of the piece you can see a complex edge consisting of a faux leather album cover, nylon mesh, and torn paper. As imagery, Mack has chosen musical notes, tape measure, and other music composition elements through Zerox copy adhered by matte medium to the surface. Mack then creates his own color to further tweak and personalize the piece. Eric Mack (b.1976, Charleston) creates mathematically based renderings with a distinct post-modern twist. Works are informed with super imposed grids, patterns, and portals. Layered surfaces are created with paint, found objects, natural fibers, and synthetic substrates that explore the systems of our visual world. His most recent show “Charting the Terrain” is on view now at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles was covered by the Los Angeles Times, KCRW, and LALA Magazine. His last solo exhibition was titled "Impossible Architectures" at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2017. Recent group shows include "Abstract Mind" at the Czong Institute of Contemporary Art, South Korea, "Small Works 2017 at Trestle Gallery, Brooklyn, "Checkered History", Outpost Artist Resources, Brooklyn, N.Y. 2015; Collections include High Museum Atlanta, Ing Investments, Hartsfield Jackson International Airport - Atlanta + Atlanta Gas & Light Co. London Calling Tailor-made for TASCHEN by Paul Smith For die-hard lovers of Paris, Berlin, London, Los Angeles, and New York, TASCHEN introduces the Portrait of a City Art Edition series. For each edition, limited to only 500 copies, a legendary local fashion designer is invited to design a bespoke fabric to line the cover, and a large signed and numbered print of one of the images from the book is included. Limited to 500 numbered copies Comes with a fine art print on archival paper, signed by Elmar Ludwig Packaged in a special cover and clamshell case designed by legendary British fashion designer Paul Smith Samuel Johnson famously said that: “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.” London’s remarkable history, architecture, landmarks, streets, style, cool, swagger, and stalwart residents are pictured in hundreds of compelling photographs sourced from a wide array of archives around the world. London is a vast sprawling metropolis, constantly evolving and growing, yet throughout its complex past and shifting present, the humor, unique character, and bulldog spirit of the people have stayed constant. This book salutes all those Londoners, their city, and its history. In addition to the wealth of images included in this book, many previously unpublished, London’s history is told through hundreds of quotations, lively essays, and references from key movies, books, and records. From Victorian London to the Swinging ’60s; from the Battle of Britain to punk; from the Festival of Britain to the 2012 Olympics; from the foggy cobbled streets to the architectural masterpieces of the millennium; from rough pubs to private drinking clubs; from Royal Weddings to raves, from the charm of the East End to the wonders of Westminster; from Chelsea girls to Hoxton hipsters; from the power to the glory: in page after page of stunning photographs, reproduced big and bold like the city itself, London at last gets the photographic tribute it deserves. TECHNOLOGY OF DIRT & AIR - Oil & Canvas Abstract Floral Painting

TECHNOLOGY OF DIRT & AIR - Oil & Canvas Abstract Floral Painting

By Jered Sprecher

Located in Signal Mountain, TN

A companion painting to this piece, TECHNOLOGY OF DIRT is owned by the Knoxville Museum of Art. The painting "TECHNOLOGY OF DIRT & AIR" was inspired by an image glanced as I passed by a florist shop window. Inside the florist show was a vibrant floral arrangement overflowing with roses and foliage. On the surface of the window were reflections of architecture behind me and abstracted slivers of light and distorted shapes of things reflected though hardly recognizable. I snapped a few photographs at the time. Several months later, I returned to those images and was intrigued at how the flowers in the image seemed to be made out of crystal and how the reflections on the window "interrupted" the ability to easily make out the forms in the photograph. I was intrigued by the complexity of the image and how recognizable elements emerged and then faded into abstraction. As I worked on this painting, I wanted it to be as if it was coming into crisp focus, while also becoming a complicated tapestry of shapes and colors. I have made six paintings in this series thus far. Jered Sprecher is a visual artist who was born in Lincoln, Nebraska (1976). He received his M.F.A. from the University of Iowa and his B.A. from Concordia University in Nebraska. He has taught at Princeton University and Cornell University. Mr. Sprecher currently lives and works in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he is an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee. Jered Sprecher’s studio practice explores the “handwriting” of humankind. The vocabulary that he draws from is focused on the vast array of marks and images in one’s surroundings. From this vocabulary he samples visual motifs and imports them into his paintings and drawings. These works continually focus on remnants and fragments that are captured in the midst of change, then edited and fused together in the space of painting. These images are pregnant with a longing to communicate. The success and failure of these “messages in a bottle” are the basis of his work. Mr. Sprecher has had solo exhibitions at Wendy Cooper Gallery, Chicago; Jeff Bailey Gallery, New York; the Art Gallery of Knoxville; The Cress Gallery-UTC, Chattanooga; and Steven Zevitas Gallery, Boston. His work has also been included in group exhibitions at The Drawing Center, New York; Brooklyn Academy of Music (Next Next Art), New York; Cheekwood Museum of Art, Nashville; Des Moines Art Center; Urban Institute for Contemporary Art, Grand Rapids; Arthouse, Austin; Mark Moore Gallery...
