2010s American Realist Kate Sammons Paintings
Oil
Kate Sammons was born in Seoul, Korea, naturalized as a US citizen one year later and raised in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. Early in life she exhibited a flair for arts and crafts that developed later into a passion for art. In 2002 she graduated from the University of Illinois with a BFA in painting before continuing on to study and apprentice at several studios to focus on representational painting. Sammons started her professional career in 2007, going on to exhibit work in galleries and museums around the country including the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and the Butler Institute of American Art. Her paintings have been featured in magazines such as Fine Art Connoisseur, The Artist’s Magazine and American Art Collector, among others. With a blend of representation and imagination, her work is described as beautiful and refined with a lighthearted spirit that reflects her personality. Among the varied subjects she paints, she often returns to themes of humanity with nature.
Sammons moved to Los Angeles in 2010, teaching art part time and creating studio work. Since then Kate appears locally at exhibitions like the annual California Art Club Gold Exhibition and the LA Art Show. In addition to seasonal shows, her art is available for purchase at several exclusive galleries in Pasadena, Denver and Orleans. From the beginning of her career, Kate has been dedicated to preserving the traditions of fine art, making originality and handcrafted quality the hallmarks of her brand. Her annual production is low as each painting is entirely unique in its identity and design. At the heart of Kate’s enterprise is a taste for art that is independent of popular conventions- timeless, distinctive and free in spirit.

Red Ice Block Tongs
By John Morfis
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
An oil painting of an antique pair of tongs, meant for use during ice fishing. Suspended from a small rope, hanging from a single nail, against a grey backdrop. Brushstrokes can be seen in the gray of the background, but are harder to make out on the subject. Morfis paints in an extremely refined, realist approach. Painting dimensions: 25 x 19 inches Framed dimensions: 30 x 24 x 1.5 inches Available at Grenning Gallery. BIOGRAPHY John Morfis was born in Glen Cove, Long Island in 1976. His humble beginnings made pursuing a career in art difficult and paradoxically necessary. Fixated on making things aesthetically pleasing, John made an extreme departure from his family life when he chose to base his life on art. Surrounded by mechanics, welders, and otherwise trade workers John had a tough time expressing his interest in a world much more utilitarian and much less expressive and impractical. With an extraordinary desire to be an artist and a grant awarded, John was able to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting from the University of Hartford in 1998. While there John studied oil painting under American realist Stephen Brown. John’s first solo show took place in 2007 at the Ellen Traut Collection Gallery in Hartford, CT and was a near sell out. Since then John has had success up and down the northeastern coast of the United States working with various galleries and collectors. His work has also appeared in various group shows at the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut. ARTIST STATEMENT Each painting, although a portrait of a tired hand...

American Portrait of the Artist's Wife by Herman Hyneman
By Herman Hyneman
Located in New York, NY
Herman Hyneman (1849-1907) Portrait of the Artist's Wife, c. late 19th century Oil on canvas 21 1/2 x 29 1/2 in. Framed: 27 1/2 x 35 1/4 in. The following is from Peter Jung who credits "a friend named Jeff Gold on Long Island." Herman N. Hyneman (1849 - 1907) was born in 1849 to one of the most prominent Jewish families in Philadelphia. Unlike most Jewish families of the time, his embraced and encouraged his artistic talent. In 1874, Hyneman followed his first cousin Moses Ezekiel, National Academy member, to Europe to study. They first went to Germany and then to France where Hyneman began eight years of study with Leon Bonnat, the French Master. In Paris, the twenty-five year old Hyneman resided in a studio building at 75 Boulevard Clichy, with expatriates Frederic Arthur Bridgeman, Charles Sprague Pearce, Milne Ramsey, and Edwin Blashfield. Hyneman was clearly exposed to the works of these more experienced artists, as well as that of Walter Gay. In 1879, one of Hyneman's genre paintings, entitled "Desdemona", was accepted into the Paris Salon. That painting received favorable reviews both in Europe, and later in Philadlephia where it was exhibited alongside the works of other Philadelphia Artists exhibiting at the Salon that included Thomas Eakins, Pearce, Edward May...
