About the Item

Fine antique Chinese snuff bottle carved from softly translucent honey-grey agate, of elegant rounded form with a short waisted neck and neatly finished raised foot. The stone has a restrained and highly attractive appearance, with subtle natural tonal variation from pale grey-beige to warm honey tones. When illuminated, the body becomes strongly translucent, revealing the depth and evenness of the material and giving the bottle a particularly luminous quality. The bottle is well hollowed, with smoothly rounded walls and carefully finished mouth and foot. With an associated domed salmon colored stopper set into a substantial decorated metal mount, the fitting worked with finely incised and punched ornament and a narrow rope-twist border. Chinese, late Qing dynasty, late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1900. Dimensions: Height: approximately 2.25 in. Width: approximately 1.75 in. Depth: approximately 1.25 in.
