About the Item

This striking vintage Italian centerpiece bowl is a wonderful example of the bold sculptural ceramics produced in Italy during the 1960s. Formed with an elegant biomorphic silhouette, the bowl combines an organically shaped oval form with finely incised vertical carving that wraps the entire exterior, creating a beautifully tactile surface. The glaze is particularly captivating. The interior is finished in a richly mottled volcanic green glaze with remarkable depth and variation, while the exterior features layered bands of charcoal, moss green, olive and burnt orange that interact with the carved texture to dramatic effect. The result is a piece that feels equally at home in a Mid-Century Modern, Studio Craft or contemporary interior. Marked "Italy" on the underside, the maker remains unidentified, though the quality of the form, carving, and glazing reflects the expressive Italian ceramic production of the period. The bowl is in good vintage condition with no cracks, repairs or structural damage. The glaze displays natural variation and intentional color breaks inherent to the firing process. There is a small area of glaze loss and roughness along one section of the rim, as shown in the photographs, which is minor and does not detract from the overall presentation.
