About the Item

This finely preserved thin-butted axe, knapped and polished from a block of mottled brown-grey coloured flint, is a powerful and aesthetic reminder of the technological advancements achieved by our ancestors during the Neolithic period. This period saw the transition of mankind’s lifestyle from that of hunter-gatherers, to an agricultural one, laying the foundations for the rise of civilization. To create an axe of this quality, a hammer stone would first have been used to knap a nodule into a rough shape, which was then ground or polished to produce a smooth surface and sharp edge. Due to their use for felling trees thereby creating new landscapes, stone axes were also endowed with special status. However, some show considerable lack of ware, leading scholars to believe that they served decorative or ritualistic purposes, rather than utilitarian ones. This example, with its polished surface and mottled orange patina, is a timeless and aesthetic example of a tool that came to be pivotal in our early history.
