About the Item

This acheulean hand axe is an exceptionally well-preserved example of the first human technology. Conceived as a multipurpose tool, it represents the technological advances achieved by early hominins during the Lower Palaeolithic period. Indeed, these iconic teardrop and leaf-shape forms have become emblematic of our early ancestors, and exemplify the profound shift in cognitive ability that occurred during this period. Fashioned by skilfully removing flakes from a core using a hammerstone, the flint has been carefully reduced to produce balanced proportions and exceptionally sharp, razor-like edges. These tools served a wide range of functions, from butchery and woodworking, making them essential tools for survival in challenging prehistoric environments. This particular example displays a mottled brown patina with accents of orange and cream. With its custom bronze mount, it is a timeless addition to any collection or interior, and a striking reminder of our early ancestors. Provenance Excavated by David Blake (1942-2015) from 1987 to 2013 in the Bishopstone area, Reculver, Kent, UK; Thence by descent.
