He was a Prussian animal painter. Deiker was specialised in animal genres related to hunting and wildlife. He also illustrated magazines and books on hunting. Carl Friedrich Deiker was the son of Friedrich Deiker, a painter and drawing teacher at the high school. His older brother, Johannes Deiker, with whom he learned to draw after their father’s death in 1843, was a painter specialising in hunting scenes. Jean-Pierre De Neef came to photography like a new convert to religion, convinced that it would lend meaning to his life. His path took him first to a photographic laboratory, having once been a Cibachrome expert, regularly visited by French art photographers who made their way to Brussels to consult him. Well-versed in modern high performance techniques, nowadays Jean-Pierre De Neef produces art photos for several internationally known photographers whose works can be found in galleries and fairs the world over. Twelve years ago Jean-Pierre De Neef’s encounter with François Bayle, art critic and curator of the works of various photographers for Brussels Art Edition, enabled him to pursue his passion in new fields. He was at the side of the Italian photographer Fabrizio La Torre (Rome 1921, Brussels 2014) in the last few years of his life, who entrusted him with detailed instructions for digitising his archives and explained to him the results he was seeking. He is widely regarded as the leading representative of the Romantic school in Belgian landscape painting, particularly known for his evocative winter scenes and rural landscapes with cattle. Verwee left school at an early age to pursue his passion for art. He enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kortrijk, where he studied under Jan Baptiste de Jonghe, a prominent landscape and animal painter. He later continued his artistic training with Eugène Verboeckhoven in Ghent, who would not only become his mentor but also a lifelong friend and collaborator. The two artists often worked side by side, and Verboeckhoven occasionally painted the figures and animals in Verwee’s landscapes, to such a degree that their early works are sometimes difficult to distinguish. Verwee followed Verboeckhoven to Brussels and established himself as a successful landscape and animal painter. Over time, he became known for landscapes that reflected the romantic tradition, with compositions echoing the work of Andreas Schelfhout, Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, Frans Keelhoff, and Johann Bernard Klombeck. His depictions of forests and rivers often employed a dreamy, atmospheric quality that captured the mood and light of nature. In his later career, Verwee sought artistic innovation but found himself increasingly focused on variations of winter landscapes after 1837. These scenes, popularized by Koekkoek and Schelfhout, were characterized by low-hanging snow clouds, icy waterways, and a cool palette of light blue and metallic grey, creating a moody and intimate ambiance. He was a Belgian impressionist painter of landscapes, marines, harbour scenes, architectures, interiors, city and canal views, portraits and figures. He was also a watercolourist. Gilsoul studied at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts with the famed master teachers and artists François Courtens (1854 – 1895) and Louis Artan (1837 – 1890). In 1882 he won his first prize at the Academy and in 1884 debuted at the Brussels Salon. He studied also at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts, where he won a prize (1885-1890). Gilsoul was member of the group ‘Voorwaerts’ in 1891. He was awarded a silver medal at the Paris World Fair in 1900. In the same year, King Leopold II commissioned several compositions for his yacht “Alberta” and knighted him to the Order of King of the Belgians. The painter stayed from 1911 in Paris, where he often painted the Versailles region, also worked and lived for some time in Brittany. He had several exhibitions in France.
